DTC GT17 Jupiter: An Affordable Travel Smartphone

Anyone who has gone for the latest Samsung Galaxy smartphone or top-of-the-line Nokia’s on offer knows that there’s a trend of ‘bigger is better’ going on. But not everyone wants a huge smartphone, just slightly smaller than a tablet. Sure, a big screen is nice. But when it comes to smartphones, there is such a thing as too big.

A friend of mine who is anti-Apple for many reasons recently complained that the Samsung Galaxy Note3 is just too big. We finally agreed that maybe Apple’s R&D into the perfect size for a phone was not in vane. But we also agree that iPhones are not affordable.

Okay – so an affordable smartphone that’s not gigantic, something that is easy to hold in the palm of your hand and that fits easily in a pocket. Also, a smartphone that allows you to check your email, update your foursquare, stalk someone on facebook, tweet and Instagram your selfies. If you’re a traveler these things are important.

What I like about DTC GT17 Jupiter?

The screen is 4.7-inches, it’s got 1GB of RAM, and a MediaTek MT6582 quad-core processor (1.3GHz each). It’s got a front and rear camera, for convenient selfies and the rear camera (13mp) has an LED flash. The body is made of plastic, which makes it lightweight, but not as tough as a metal body. It’s also seriously slim.

But get this – and this is probably the coolest feature for someone who travels a lot – it can handle regular SIM and micro SIM cards as well as micro SD cards. That means that as you travel you can buy whatever size SIM card is most convenient for you. Bingo.

DTC GT17 Jupiter specs:

All in all, the DTC GT17 Jupiter knocks off some of our favorite and most familiar features (volume rocker on the side, home, back, and menu keys) and in a package size that feels great in your palm. No complaints – it’s a great little package and it is fast and inexpensive. For only P6,990.00 ($156.00) this new gadget is definitely top notch for travel junkies.
