Selecta Gold Series
What would you do if it’s raining in Boracay? Eat Ice Cream!!!! Even though the cool weather is on us, that doesn’t mean that ice cream doesn’t still satisfy a necessary sweet spot in all of us. From Alta Vista de Boracay Hotel, we headed to D’Mall in Station 2 to attend the Biggest Ice Cream Party of 2010 held in Epic Bar Boracay.
Epic Bar Boracay
The king of desserts is definitely ice cream, and whether you like chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, or double chocolate malted crunch, it’s as close as heading down to the market to get your favorite kind.
Chef at Work
Of course, there are better options than just going to the market. Selecta and Fox International Channels have combined forces to hold the first-ever Gold Series Selecta Dessert Competition. Whoa! Stop the presses! Last December 30, 2010, we were invited to visit Boracay to see the top chefs from the best five-star hotels in the island as they compete in making the sweetest treats.
Ice Cream Party
There was a major cup sampling before the event, and the newly opened Epic Bar in D’mall gave out drinks and introduced the four top chefs to everyone. Everyone there got a free Selecta Gold Series just for being in the event. Gorgeous models handed out golden tickets to the event, which brought in more than 300 people. They were all chilled out by the DJ sounds of DJ Erwin Edralin.

Meanwhile the hostess with the mostess Chinggay Andrada and Jude Turcuato (FOX International Channels Philippine Territory Director) along with JC Caro (Selecta Brands) handed out great cocktails and welcomed the crowd with some lively talks.

We’ve all heard of a Desert Island, but the theme for this competition was Island Dessert (Dessert has two s’s because you want to have it twice… Agree?). Chefs picked flavors and made the theme dessert in the best sort of Iron Chef style. Only 15 minutes to make the most from Vanilla Almond, Chocolate Truffles, Berry Strawberry, or Hazelnut Brownie. How did they do? Scrumdiddlyumptiousness ensued.
Selecta Gold Series
Mango Crepe with Chocolate Truffle – Alvin Brillo and Gomer Teodoro – Villa de Oro
Strawberry Crepe – Christine San Diego – Ti Braz
Ice Cream Tower in Mango and Caramelized Almond – Eric Arevalo and Jon Tuala- The Tides
Fruity Ice Cream Caramel Cake- Salvadore Mupro – Courtyard Bistro
Rainy Boracay
While they all sounded great, it was clear that the winner was going to be the chef who used the Selecta Ice Cream flavors in the most delicious way. The judges’ weight counted towards 50%, with the rest coming from the audience. The judges were Frances Haw of Summit Media Philippines, TV personality and a certified ice cream-holic, Rovilson Fernandez, and blogger Carlos Canlas of Foodiemanila.com.
Melo with the Award-Winning Chef
So, who did they pick? After plenty of time having fun with the audience and enjoying the delicious creations of the top chefs in Boracay, the judges finally narrowed down their choice to a single winner.
While it was no easy task to figure out what the best dessert was, it certainly wasn’t a painful job to go back and test everything again and again. As predicted, the judges and audience picked the Ice Cream Tower in Mango and Carmelized Almond and awarded the chefs from The Tides with cash and prizes.
Afterwards, the judges, chefs, and audience all enjoyed the DJ sounds of the big party that followed. Talk about cool whip! This was one sweet competition!
