There is a slew of cultural events and lots of new events lined up all year long. A visit to London and its many exciting events scheduled for 2018 should be on your bucket list in the coming year.

Eighteen for 18 in Liverpool:  The next year 2018, will make it a decade since Liverpool was crowned the European Capital of Culture. The event will be celebrated all year long with the famous Eighteen for 18 Series playing host to the renowned Terracotta Warriors on display at the World Museum (Feb – Oct). It will be more than a decade since the famous warriors are brought from China to the UK.

Beautiful World, Liverpool:  Staying in Liverpool, there is the contemporary art extravaganza – Liverpool Biennial which will feature an eclectic mix of contemporary art in galleries, disused buildings and public spaces across the city (14 Jul – 28 Oct). The Biennial began in 1998 with 2018 marking its 20th anniversary. More than 450 artists from across the globe will showcase their creations, with 305 new art creations commissioned for the event.

Bristol: One of the biggest projects in the city the Bristol Floating Harbour project will see the unveiling of a state-of-the-art museum. This museum celebrates and promotes Brunel’s legacy and serve as inspiration for budding innovators and engineer. Its collection houses rare artefacts and items and also involves the restoration of Isambard K Brunel’s Drawing Office. Bristol has a long and illustrious theatre heritage and is also home to the oldest functional theatre in Britain, the Bristol Old Vic. It is undergoing renovation and will reopen in 2018. Another place getting revamped is the famous music venue St George’s Bristol. It will feature a special sound wave-shaped glass installation hanging in mid-air, within the foyer, the creation of installation maestro Luke Jerram. He drew inspiration for it from a musical composition by Philip Glass.

The city will also celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Bristol Balloon Fiesta in summer. It is the biggest outdoor event of its type in Europe and a fabulous event to be a part of. There is nothing quite as exciting as watching the sky filled with beautiful coloured balloons of all shapes and sizes.

Great Exhibition of the North 2018, Newcastle-Gateshead:  A popular summer event the exhibition is on from 22 June – 9 September 2018, celebrates design, art and culture of the North of England. There are amazing exhibits, thrilling street performances, and avant-garde culture among a host of other interesting events and activities. Visitors could enjoy the experience at either the Great North Museum that showcases the culture, arts, innovation and design of the place. The second venue is Gateshead Quays where you drip in at the BALTIC Centre. Apart from these events, a number of outdoor spaces and venues in Newcastle-Gateshead will have exhibits of new innovations from the area. The fiesta starts with the opening of ‘Get North’ at the weekend on 22 June and celebrations wind up on September 8 & 9 with the Great North Run and Creating the Future. A not-to-miss event if you are in Bristol at this part of the year.

Cook 250, Plymouth: Moving south to Plymouth, the city will celebrate the 250th anniversary of Captain James Cook on HMS Endeavour to new lands, which was his maiden voyage of discovery to the Pacific and the Antipodes. It will part of a chain of events taking place all across the UK known as Cook 250. Plymouth was where the expedition was launched and where the HMS Endeavour was built and return to the city in 2018. Greenwich National Maritime Museum is commemorating the event with a bang with four permanent galleries opening, aptly titled “Endeavour Galleries”.

Fotografiska, London: November 2018, will see the launch of the biggest dedicated gallery of photography in the city. Spread across an incredible 89,000 sq ft in Whitechapel it can host up to seven exhibitions at a time. The good news is that visitors can see all seven with a single entrance ticket. The venue is the second, after the resounding success of its maiden venue in Stockholm, which is still drawing large crowds, since it opened in 2010. It will feature photographic exhibits of the leading photographers in the world.

In the past, Fotografiska Sweden has exhibited works of legendary photographers like Serrano, Brandt, LaChapelle, Mann, Leibovitz and Newton among others.  It will also showcase the works of new and talented contemporary photographers.  Fotografiska, London will offer a wonderful glimpse into the exponentially evolving art of photography.
