Did you know that one of the worlds greatest football player is a Filipino? Paulino Alcántara Riestrá was a Filipino–Spanish footballer who spent most of his playing career at Barcelona and was the first Filipino and Asian player to play for a European club.

Alcántara was born in Ilo-ilo to a Spanish father and an Ilonggo mother. Paulino Alcántara grew up in Barcelona and initially played as a striker for FC Galeno before he was spotted by Joan Gamper and signed up for FC Barcelona. Alcantara started playing football professionally in 1912 but he went back to the Philippines with his parents in 1916 to continue his studies.

Paulino Alcantara also played for the Philippines in 1917 at the Far Eastern Championship Games in Tokyo where Philippines defeated Japan National Team 15-2.

Local football clubs participated in the 1 WoodGrove Football Festival held recently in WoodGrove Park, San Fernando, Pampanga.

Football is gaining back its popularity in the Philippines and with the partnership of private companies like the leading leisure developer Landco Pacific Corporation and Chelsea FC Soccer School Philippines, they recently staged the first Football Festival in WoodGrove Park, in San Fernando, Pampanga.

Chelsea FC Soccer School Philippines is run by the Younghusband Football Academy established by popular football players and brothers James and Phil Younghusband.

The venue of the First Football Festival is at WoodGrove Park’s world-class football field which was completed and launched last year and has already gained popularity as the only 11-Aside football field convertible to two 7-Aside fields in San Fernando, Pampanga. WoodGrove Park is a joint venture between Landco Pacific Corporation and Central Weyland Properties, Inc. This Football Festival aims to promote the sport at the grassroots level to hone and develop the talents and skills of Filipino athletes. Chelsea FC Soccer School Philippines and Landco plan to hold the Football Festival annually to further foster interest and love of the sport among young football players in San Fernando.
