Student Fare Discount Act: How to avail 20% Discount On Student Airfares

Manila, Philippines — This news will put a smile on student travelers’ faces. The Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) has recently pushed out its implementing rules of a law that tells that students can now avail of a 20 percent discount on domestic flights.

In a resolution, CAB said that the discount on domestic flights applies to elementary, secondary, technical-vocational, and higher education Filipino students. The policy is also effective starting Nov. 1.

Based on the provision of the Student Fare Discount Act, otherwise known as R.A. 11314, students can pick between the discounted regular fare and promotional fares.

Note that the discount is applicable for the whole period that the student is enrolled, which includes during holidays and weekends.

“The fare discount under this regulation shall be available during the entire period while the student is enrolled, including weekends and holidays,” reads the policy instrument. “Provided, that, in a case where a promotional fare approved by the Civil Aeronautics Board is also offered by the airline, the student shall have the option to choose between the promotional fare and the regular fare less the discount provided under R.A. 11314.”

When purchasing tickets in ticketing offices, students should present these identification cards to avail of the discount:

  • Validated enrollment form
  • School ID
  • Any of these documents: baptismal certificate, birth certificate, naturalization certificate, Form 137, passport

Those who are caught falsifying their documents, however, will face civil and penal liabilities.

In the meantime, there’s also a provision on the said policy instrument dedicated to those airlines which do not grant the abovementioned privilege to students.

“An airline which does not grant a student the aforesaid privilege shall be sanctioned in accordance with Section 10 of Republic Act. No. 11314,” reads the IRR.

In related news, the Department of Transportation later in June this year announced that it’s offering free LRT-2, MRT-3, as well as PNR rides for students during rush hours on weekdays.

At any rate, such policies are a welcome treat to a lot of students across the country.
