Where to Stay: German Unson Heritage House Bed and Breakfast
Silay City, Philippines — While there are lots of heritage houses turned into a museum in Negros Occidental, there’s one Neo-Spanish style-house in particular in Silay City that’s turned into a bed-and-breakfast worth checking out, called German Unson Heritage House Bed and Breakfast.

The bed-and-breakfast is located at No. 5 Zamora Street in Silay City and has been welcoming local and foreign guests since June 11, 2016. It is also close to the Silay public plaza and parish church, and 15-minute drive away in Bacolod City.

Originally built in 1938, this two-storey house underwent numerous renovations until it was restored in its original design in mid-1970s. It is also declared as a heritage house by the National Historical Institute on April 6, 1993.

This opulent home was owned by the late German Locsin Unson and Fe de la Rama Ledesma-Unson before it was opened as a bed and breakfast. The younger daughter shared that her grandfather, Dr. Lope de la Rama was the original owner of the house who was also one of the few doctors that time, then handed over the ownership to her daughter, Fe later on.

It is said that before the second world war, their family evacuated and Japanese soldiers have occupied their house. Years later, it underwent renovation to accommodate the family’s needs.

They also take pride in their sumptuous dishes and drinks such as the Relyeno, Adobo Flakes for breakfast, and for dessert; sweet mangoes paired with Hot Spanish chocolate paired with crunchy pinipig (toasted glutinous rice), sweet mangoes, and of course, their uber-popular suman sprinkled with muscovado sugar.
Rooms
There is a total of four spacious rooms in German Unson; German-Fe, Lourdes Room, Rene Room, and the Carmen-Cristina Room. To imbibe the heritage vibe, the house is decorated with artifacts, paintings, and memorabilia, from fine china, old wardrobes, and more. Each room is well-designed and has an overall vibe where you’ll feel you’re living in the 1930’s era.
