Manila, Philippines – There’s something about hotel breakfasts that make us excitedly roll out of bed in the morning, whatever time zone we wake up in. Whether we travel for business, leisure, or a little bit of both, the first meal in the morning is one of the experiences we remember—such that a hotel’s spectacular breakfast spread and service are enough to make us book that property again!
Over the years, many hotels worldwide have understandably elevated their breakfast service as a key part of their offering. The seemingly endless food choices (read: eggs, cereals, pancakes, waffles, bacon, sausage, ahhhh, so much more…) and drinks make for a delightful morning, an absolutely great way to start the day right. Even room service breakfast is nothing short of glorious, what with the beautiful spread served to you in bed!
So, who misses hotel breakfast?
With the pandemic squashing all our travel plans, it looks like we will have to stay home a little longer. But fret not! You can now experience a five-star hotel-like breakfast again in the comforts of your own abode—thanks to Fast Breakfast Food Service, the first fine-dining breakfast tray service in the country.
It started in 2019 when former F&B manager Lyka Bontogon (pictured in the cover image) realized that such service did not exist in the Philippines. Lyka’s career spanned more than 10 years in food & beverage in domestic and international hotels and resorts—her last post was in the in-room dining department of Wynn Palace in Macau. She also taught Food & Beverage courses in Enderun Colleges, Southville International School, Lyceum of the Philippines Manila, and Lyceum of the Philippines Cavite.
She got the idea for the business when one day, her son Kyle requested breakfast in bed. “Since my background was in F&B, I wanted to give my son something leveled up. I used all my resources at home at the time, and that got me thinking that you could only experience hotel-like breakfast when you check in a hotel or resort,” she said. “My mother also just had an operation, and she could only eat her meals in bed. So a service such as this would really be helpful for people like her with such needs.”
Although armed with knowledge and expertise of the hospitality industry, Lyka still took courses from the Food Safety & Hygiene Academy of the Philippines (FoodSHAP) because she puts a premium on food safety. She is very hands-on in every step: from order-taking and food preparation and plating to delivery. She worked with her friend, the late Chef Milton Manlapas, to finalize the menu and costing.
“Fast Breakfast is a one-of-a-kind catering innovation. We cater food and beverage in your bedroom, or whichever part of the house you want to enjoy your breakfast, complete with custom-made bed trays, top-quality dining equipment, and of course, delicious food,” explained Lyka. “We hired deaf/mute PWDs to deliver the breakfast service, as we want them to feel that they are able and capable. They are the ones who will put a smile on the lips of people you will surprise with breakfast in bed, as 90% of our orders are surprises for their loved ones.”
They also take note of the dietary restrictions and preferences of their “guests,” and you can order solo or couple trays. The menu changes seasonally.
