Costa Coffee Masterclass: The Coffee Costa Experience with Master Tastemaker Gennaro Pelliccia
Who’s up for some coffee chat? I’d like to spill some beans over what I recently got into.
Costa Coffee Master Tastemaker Gennaro Pelliccia
A week ago, I joined a handful of bloggers and print media representatives who were invited to attend a Coffee Masterclass conducted by no other than Costa Coffee’s official Tastemaker himself, Master of Coffee Gennaro Pelliccia, who went to the Philippines just to deliver one of the best coffee experiences one will have. This event took place at Costa Coffee – One World Place in Bonifacio Globaly City, Taguig.
Costa Coffee Varieties at Costa Coffee Masterclass
Upon reaching the venue, we were requested to order our choice of coffee and food while the event proper was just about to start. Since it was my first time to indulge in Costa Coffee, I sought the recommendation of the barista over the counter. He immediately endorsed their own version of cappuccino, the flat white coffee style which has a little less foam than that of a latte and has a little less volume but still retains that milky, creamy texture than that of an espresso.

During the Costa Coffee Masterclass, each one of us was provided a table, on top of which stands a Coffee Master Kit, a paper cup and three (3) small bowls containing coffee varieties named after their country of origin – Colombia, Kenya and Indonesia coffee. Each coffee variety had a different level of acidity. And talking about each’s unique hint of flavor, Colombia coffee is fruity; Kenya coffee packs that chocolatey tinge; while Indonesia coffee is full-bodied.

At the Masterclass, Gennaro talked about the different beans grown in the world and what makes each one different from the other. He also demonstrated how to determine good from bad coffee. Aside from that, he taught us how to properly slurp and sip and obtain that sophisticated coffee tongue which Gennaro possesses. Well, to actually define the term “sophisticated”, allow me to describe it the Gennaro way.

The Italian Coffee Master’s tongue is insured for approximately $22 million. Yep! That’s how expensive his taste is! In fact, Gennaro’s tongue was first insured by employer Costa Coffee way back in 2009. It is said to be the most expensive tongue on Earth!
Master Tastemaker Gennaro Pelliccia giving us Coffee Lecture
Apart from letting us take a dip into the world of coffee, Gennaro also shared Costa Coffee’s secrets behind its perfect-tasting coffee and the correct way of doing coffee cupping (or observing the taste and aromas of coffee). And the reason why Costa Coffee boasts of one of the best tasting coffee in the market today is that it makes use of a special blend of coffee called Mocha Italia which is a mix of carefully selected and perfectly roasted Robusta and Arabica beans. This blend only uses 1% of the best beans from around the world.

How did Master Gennaro achieve this title of being a Master Taster? Actually, he was a former barista who then became a coffee taste veteran throughout his 23 years (and counting) of Costa Coffee experience.
