Get Ready for Cebu Pacific’s Juan for Fun Backpacker Challenge 2015!

Last weekend, I played a part in Cebu Pacific’s “Juan for Fun Backpacker Challenge 2015 Media Edition”. This affair was held in the stunning island of Siquijor.

With Adventure Coaches Iya Villania, Jude Bacalso, Joyce Pring and Jaco de Leon from Team Bogart.

Together with 9 other writers and 5 celebrity coaches, we first stopped at Dumaguete for a motivating breakfast before heading to Siquijor. We arrived in the locality around 12 noon.

Upon reaching the gorgeous and calming Coco Grove Beach Resort, the room keys were immediately given to us so that we could all scan our assigned rooms and drop our backpacks. After that, we all had lunch at the resort’s amazing Salamandas Al Fresco Restaurant and straightaway proceeded to the pavilion for the mini adventure briefing and short press conference.

The past winners of Cebu Pacific’s “Juan for Fun Backpacker Challenge” were introduced to us during the said briefing, and they showed their support to the media by imparting some tips and stories based from the previous backpacker contests.

After the short meeting, the 5 celebrities who acted as adventure coaches were then requested to select a colored handkerchief. Participants were later on summoned to choose a colored handkerchief as well. This handkerchief assortment is made to simply ascertain as to which adventure coach each of us will be teamed up. Accordingly, all the teams were comprised of one celebrity adventure coach and two media members.

There were 4 challenge pit stops located around Siquijor that we have to pop in. The exploration on the mystical island of fire started off by a clue card that was handed at the lobby of Coco Grove Beach Resort. The teams were allowed to open the clue card just after the sound of the opening whistle. We were also given the chance to pick our own multi-cab (which turned out to be a vital element in the game) that will transport us to all the challenge booths.

After the opening whistle, our team premeditated that we should first board our multi-cab before opening the clue card. This game tactic got us going faster and we got on our selected ride ahead of all the other teams. The clue card had mixed-up letters which denotes the hint about our supposedly next location where we will be performing the first official challenge.

My co-player Enzo painlessly recognized “Capilay Spring Park” as our first stop through the use of the map. The pioneer mission at the park was to assemble a puzzle that contains a chain of pictures to create a realistic itinerary. Luckily, we were able to complete the challenge ahead all the other groups, however, we experienced a major glitch pinpointing the next location.

Regrettably, our excellent start was smashed when we arrived last on the second challenge booth, but given that everybody was able to complete the food challenge before our team, we no longer needed to finish the task and just directly headed to the succeeding target instead.

Our third challenge booth was located in the “Century Old Balete Tree”, surprisingly, our team was able to go past 3 other teams. This turnaround was made possible by our ever skilled and competitive driver. The task this time was to half-fill a yellow plastic pail using a plastic cup with three strings as handles. From the location of the pail, we need to get the water from the spring located below the gigantic banyan tree.

After killing the third mission, we moved to the last challenge booth situated at the beach front of Coco Grove Beach Resort. The final dare was to finish the jigsaw puzzle with the Cebu Pacific logo and the Siquijor map.

Yep, we only finished second but it was truly an extraordinary adrenalin pumping event that not winning the major price did not even bother us at all. Good job, Cebu Pacific!

One more returning adventure coach is Jude Bacalso, she said that she found being an adventure guru daunting at first, “You are never too sure that you are able to guide the teams to the best of your ability. By the end of the competition, it became clear that learning is a two way street: I was reminded that letting loose and enjoying the moment is just as important as winning. It really is the journey, not the destination.”
