On my most recent trip to Boracay, I noticed an extra ordinary trash bin right beside the luggage x ray machine in NAIA Terminal 3.

What made it Extra ordinary? This transparent container serves as the trash bin for confiscated items which were not allowed inside each passengers hand carry baggage.

Different countries may have different rules on restricted and prohibited items. Would you believe Rosary and other religious artifacts like bible is not allowed in any Saudi Arabian airport?

Prohibited items onboard
Prohibited Items inside the aircraft

In the Philippines, we follow IATA rules; Here’s the list of things that are considered dangerous or prohibited goods;

Explosives, flammable or non-inflammable gas (such as aerosol paints, butane gas, lighter refills) refrigerated gas (such as filled aqualung cylinders, liquid nitrogen), flammable liquids (such as paints, thinners, solvents), flammable solids (such as matches, fire lighters), organic peroxides (such as resins), Toxic, Poisonous and infective substances (such as Rat Poison, Baygon… You are not required to kill the insects inside the aircraft LOL), radioactive material (such as radium), corrosive materials (such as acid, alkali, mercury, thermometers and vinegar…. and why would you bring Vinegar at the first place?), magnetic substances, oxidizing materials (such as bleaches);

Weapons of any kind such as antique firearms, swords, knives and similar items. Liquid beauty products like lotion and rubbing alcohol is also prohibited.

I’m sure you don’t want to see your expensive Swiss knife or your Zippo lighter on the trash bin, so fix you luggage ahead of time and double check your bag before going to the airport.

Till Next:)

    Reading this reminded me of one incident last year (2009) while traveling locally in the US. I forgot to leave my swiss knife at the hotel and I realized this only after going through the x-rays. I went out of the airport and found a suitable hiding place – beside the bushes and beneath some small rocks. It was still there when I came back! =)

    why throw them away? you just have to be creative sometimes!
