DBP RoRo Interisland Race 2009 – A Photo Essay

Covering a race is not that easy, we sometimes need to follow the racers activity to capture each and every single detail and apart from following the racers on every pit stop, we also need to capture each moment whether its exhilirating, happy or sad (not applicable :).

I was invited to cover the last years RoRo Adventure race but unfortunately i was scheduled to visit and conquer Batanes so I had to take a rain check. A couple of months ago, I was invited again by Blooey to cover and experience the yearly Interisland race sponsored by the Development Bank of the Philippines.

The Pasig River Ferry Service

Part of the effort to bring back the previous glory of the Pasig River the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission (PRRC) revived the Pasig River Ferry Service (PRFS) to provide an alternative transport route to help decongest the perennial traffic in Metro Manila. This was done in conjunction with the development of the banks of Pasig River into linear parks and walkways following the resettlement of informal settlers in the river.

Pahiyas Festival 2009 schedule of activites

Among all towns in Quezon celebrating the feast of San Isidro labrador, Pahiyas Festival is undoubtedly the most colorful if not the most popular. It all started as a gift-giving ritual by the natives of Lucban to the Franciscan missionaries who were responsible for bringing Catholicism to Quezon in 1583.

When Fr. Juan de Placencia took over as the town’s first church administrator, he continued the practice of offering the years harvest to the Spanish friars as thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest. The ritual was carried on by the next parish priest, Fr. Diego de Oropesa, until it became a tradition for the Lucbanins.

Pahiyas is a harvest festival celebrated each year in honor of San Isidro Labrador, the patron saint of farmers. Similar festival is also being observed in the towns of Candelaria, Tayabas (Mayohan sa Tayabas), Sariaya (Hagisan Festival), Tiaong and Lucena City (Pasayahan sa Lucena). Considered one the Philippines’ biggest harvest festivals, it is deeply rooted in the traditional celebration of thanksgiving for bountiful harvests. Continue Reading

Philippines still free from Swine Flu H1N1

The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised the H1N1 virus, commonly called swine flu, to the 5th level on a 6-level scale, after the virus has spread to more than a dozen countries, indicating that an influenza pandemic is imminent.

There has been no reported case of H1N1 flu in the Philippines, and is thus declared as an H1N1-free destination.  The government is closely monitoring all incoming travelers in six international airports, seaports and other airports servicing chartered flights with thermal scanners to detect body temperatures. Special isolation areas have also been put up in these ports to quarantine travelers exhibiting flu symptoms, especially those coming from places with reported cases of H1N1 flu. Continue Reading

Hanging Coffins of Sagada : A dying Igorot tradition

The Hanging Coffins of Sagada is definitely one of the most popular tourist spot in Mountain Province. Visiting this old world burial site only involves a short hike but one thing more interesting is you will have to pass by an American influenced cemetery which is located on a hilltop called Echo Valley.

Trekking to the hilltop was a chilly and easy journey but seeing a Globe Telecom Cell Cite right at the back of the Calvary replica was rather disappointing. After just a short walk down to the place called Echo Valley, the disappointment we had was eased after seeing the magnificent view of Sagada’s rocky village and the jaw-dropping view of the Hanging Coffins.

Sagada Hanging Coffins

The path was not paved and the soil is naturally sticky and slippery so everyone decided not to continue the trek down to the nearest Hanging Coffin’s view point, instead everyone enjoyed shouting and cam-whoring in the valley. The place was not called Echo Valley for nothing, Its one of the few places in this world where shouting is allowed and apparently…. enjoyed. Continue Reading
